Will Rogers, arguably one of America’s greatest humorists and social commentators said, “Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.”

When I was an adolescent, I spent far too much time at a pool hall called Hanks, in Berkeley. The hall was seedy, unkempt and on the border of legality, and so were the cliental. I absorbed many things, some never washed off. I learned about life and how it differs from the official version taught in school. In retrospect, the world in that pool hall was much closer to the real world.

The 2013 Bauma Fair was held outside of Munich, Germany mid April. This was the 30th edition of the International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment—and if you think that is a mouthful, you should see it in German.

It used to be held downtown but the show got too big for the facilities that continue to host the Oktoberfest. The new location is the old Munich airport. The transportation from town is good, and of course, runs on time.

Now is the time for all good boom pump owners to come together. The reason is for simple self-preservation. No talk of brotherhood or Kumbayah prattle, just simple common sense to address a serious problem.

The common problem we are talking of is the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Truck & Bus (on-road) diesel engine rule and how it applies to boom pump owners. The rules are now in place and enforceable. The local Air Quality Districts (AQMDs) as well as CARB are enforcing them. Some of you are in compliance and many of you are probably not.

First thing I need to do is apologize to all. I neglected to mention at the board meeting in Ontario February 9 that I had just come from the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas. We had a booth there and Rudy and I were on hand to inform and educate the crowd. For my penance I will cut back on my helpings of parsnips, beets and other root vegetables.

That was the title of a political novel written by American writer Sinclair Lewis in 1935. The plot is about a populist “fascist” politician who gets elected President of the United States and sets about to take complete control of the government. Having gained total control he sought, he imposes totalitarian rule. Of course, you say, “It can’t happen here”. Well Maybe!
